Professional Summary

Jessica Claire I was born in New Jersey and moved to Harlem with my Mother and siblings at the height of The Harlem Renaissance. This was perfect timing for me and my love of art. The view all around me shaped me into the painter I am today. The strife of the poor black peoples and the tales of slaves really shaped my view of our plight and the expression in my art. I used to go to the New York public library, because it was free and I could spend hours there consuming so much knowledge of the arts and history. I was very interested in the Schomburg Collection, which focused on black history and culture. I got my inspiration for what I would paint for my life's work from that collection. I would always put a caption under esch painting to have the viewers more immersed in my work, but it had to be historically accurate. I paint in a series because I cannot tell the whole story of my subject in one painting. I think of myself as more of a story teller than just simply a painter. I studied European painters and I have always painted in my own style of abstract cubism with a twist. I have been a Professor of Art and Graphic Art at Pratt Institute for 14 years. I Taught at Black Mountain College as well as The University of Washington in Seattle.

Highlights

• 04/1958 In 1946 I won the Guggenheim Scholarship for Creative Arts as one of the first black American recipients. In 1990 I received the National Medal of Arts, the highest honor bestowed on an artist by the United States Government.
